Computer System Settings for Courses

Please ensure any computer you intend to study on, including laptops, home or office PC’s, have their settings checked and adjusted following the instructions below. Note that 99% of technical issues arise because of individual PC settings and/or Security settings.

The following are frequently asked technical questions and answers, such as what to do when you are experiencing difficulty trying to run our online courses on your computer and what to do to ensure that your computer settings are favorable to the requirements of our online training courses.

Our FAQs are divided into three sections for easy access to questions specific to your industry. The section listed first is Medical, then Automotive and lastly, Information Technology/Business Skills.

FAQ Tree -

What type of course are you enrolled in?

Medical (Billing, Transcription and/or Coding)

Automotive (ASE/Mast)

SkillSoft (Information Technology / Business Skills)

In order to for the medical courses to work smoothly, you may need to apply a few settings to your computer.

For Windows XP/2000 -The first thing to do is go to the "control panel" of your computer. Once there, click "add/remove programs".

For Window Vista- Instead, click on the Windows Icon in the lower left hand corner of the screen, and then “control panel”. Once there click “uninstall programs” under the program icon.

Wait for the list to populate.

Look for the following listings, as they are required to utilize the course smoothly:

Adobe Reader (any version) -   www.adobe.com

Adobe Shockwave player / Flash - www.adobe.com

J2SE Runtime Environment (any version) -www.java.com

Also check for:

Real PlayerIf you should find this listed, click "Remove" to delete it from your system. The program, while not detrimental to your system, does prevent Adobe Flash and hence the course, from working properly.

Question: Whenever I click on a link or the media resources button in the course, nothing happens. Why?

Answer: Only two things can cause this: 1.You don’t have Adobe Reader installed or 2. You have an active pop-up blocker.

See instructions above to confirm you have Adobe Reader installed. Once the installation has been confirmed, follow the instructions below.

Pop-up Blockers

Pop-Up Blockers can prove to be a very annoying while trying to go through your training. Unfortunately, they do not always announce that they are doing there job. Should your course freeze, attempt to load a page and fail, or should you click an icon and nothing happens, you may have a pop-up blocker working against you. To check if you have one active, go to the log-on screen for your course and click on the left hand side where it states “Click here to check for required browser settings”. The program will check and either tell you that all the setting requirements have been met or it will tell you have a pop-up blocker.

If you are running Internet Explorer 7 or 8, it has a pop-up blocker included. Just open Internet Explorer, and click “Tools” on the address bar. Then, simply click “turn off Pop-Up Blocker”.

As you review through the listings on Add/Remove Programs (for XP/2000) or Uninstall Programs (for Vista), you may want to remove the following (if found) as they contain Pop-Up Blockers that may restrict access to portions of the course:

Google toolbar

Yahoo toolbar

NetZero toolbar

AOL toolbar

Also be aware that numerous Virus Protections also contain Pop-up blockers. Do not remove the Virus Protection!! If you are unable to turn off the Pop-up blocker in the Virus Protection, then temporarily disable the Virus Protection before opening your web browser.

The following Virus Protection programs are known to have pop-up blockers:

Symantec (Norton)

MacAfee

As a last resort, if you are unable to remove or disable a pop-up blocker, you can try to hold the “Ctrl” key on your keyboard and click on the link you are trying to go to. This acts as a “allow pop-up” command for a lot of pop-up blockers (but not all).

If you need any help applying these settings or have any questions, call 1-800-313-1630 and ask for Tech Support.

Question: After I log in, the site shows a window that says “Login in progress... If this message remains for more than 40 seconds, Click here for further instructions but it never seems to go any further. What happened?

Answer: The system was trying to activate the Java Console on your PC but for one reason or another, it was unable to do so. Try going through the instructions below to fix the problem:

Step 1 - Verify that you have Java -

 For Windows XP/2000 -

The first thing to do is go to the "control panel" of your computer.

 Once there, click "add/remove programs".

Wait for the list to populate. The list is in alphabetical order; go to "J".

If you should find "java runtime”, "JRE ", "Sun Java “or any variation on these, you have java installed.

Should you find multiple versions (JRE 6.5, JRE 6.8, JRE 6.8.1, etc. etc.), uninstall all but one version. If multiple versions are active on the same system, it can cause various erratic and annoying errors.

If you do not find Java-

Click on the following link to download and install Java:

 ftp://cbtdirect.com/Java_Setup6v14.exe

For Window Vista-

Instead click on the Windows Icon in the lower left hand corner of the screen, and then “control panel”.

Once there click “programs and features” under the program icon.

Wait for the list to populate - The list is in alphabetical order, go to "J". If you should find "java runtime", "JRE ", "Sun Java” or any variation on these, you have java installed.

We recommend that Vista users use Java 6 or higher, as it seems to have the lowest error rate for the Vista Desktop. You can download this version directly from our FTP site:

ftp://cbtdirect.com/Java_Setup6v14.exe

If you do not find Java- Click on the following link to download Java directly to the desktop (when asked to run or save, choose “save” and have it save to your desktop) and then right-click over the java icon on the desktop and choose “Run as Administrator” to install Java.

ftp://cbtdirect.com/Java_Setup6v14.exe

STEP 2 - Insure Java is active as a browser add-on.

For Windows XP/Vista - Close your browser and reopen it. Once open, click "tools" (in the upper right hand corner) and then "manage add-ons" and then "enable or disable add-ons". Once the list populates, insure that the following browser add-ons are enabled:

 SSVHelper Class (Sun Microsystems, Inc.)

Sun Java Console (Sun Microsystems, Inc.)

If you are only able to locate a single add-on from Sun Microsystems, then Java was not properly installed. Uninstall Java, and reinstall via STEP 1.

Step 3 - Insure that there are no active Firewalls blocking Java.

The following Software Firewalls are known to actively block Java:

 Zone Alarm

 Black Ice Defender

 Kapersky Firewall

 Sunbelt Personal Firewall

If you have any of these programs active, please deactivate them before opening your web browser.

In addition, if you are accessing your training from a work environment, please be aware your Employer may have Hardware firewall or Java restrictions installed. Please check with your Network administrator for details.

If the problem persists, contact our Technical Support Staff at 1-800-313-1630.

Question: Can I study offline?

Answer: The courses can be downloaded for offline use on Microsoft Operating Systems only.

Please follow the steps:

  1. Go to the following link ftp://cbtdirect.com/SCM_manual2.exe and download the SkillSoft course manager to your desktop.
  1. Once downloaded, install the application (for VISTA users, right click, and then click "run as administrator”)
  1. Once installed, close the Application (the SCM) and log onto Skillport.
  1. Go to the desired training and click the download icon (it looks like a small PC with a green arrow pointing down).
  1. You will see a small window come up, stating something to the effect of "updating properties".
  1. This update allows the SCM to recognize your username and password from SkillPort, regardless of whether you are online or offline.

7.       Your course will run normally offline. The progress of each module, test results and updates will be transferred when you next go online to the course.

Question: Why am I being asked to install the SCM when attempting to download the course, when I have already previously done this?

Answer: This indicates that SkillPort was unable to detect if your PC has the SkillSoft Course Manager (SCM) installed due to a Java error. To correct, follow the instructions below:

1 Access the SCM installation directory (c:\Program Files\SkillSoft\ by default), then open the "Client" folder.

2 Locate the file "__skillsoftLoaded.jar", right-click it, and select "Copy" (It may also appear as __skillsoftLoaded.)

 3 Access c:\Program Files\Java\ where you may see a Sun Java folder(s) (i.e. j2re1.4.1, etc).

4 For EVERY Java folder found, please access the \lib\ext sub-folder, right click and “Paste” a copy of the "__skillsoftLoaded.jar" file.  If the file already exists, please over-write it, regardless of how identical they appear.

5 Please close all Internet Browser windows, access your SkillPort account, and re-attempt to download a course. If the problem persists contact Technical Support at 1-800-313-1630.

Question: I am trying to study offline, but every time it asks me for a username and password, I put in the same one I use online and it tells me “Authorization Failed”. I was able to use it before without a problem; what happened?

Answer: The SCM will often update for the purpose of maintaining your progress both online and offline. Occasionally, for whatever reason, the update will have an irreconcilable error to it. This error often temporarily corrupts the logon information for the SCM. Follow the instructions below to fix the issue:

1. Click on "My Computer"

2. Click on "Local Disk(C:)"

3. Click on "Program Files"

4. Click on "SkillSoft"

5. Click on "Client"

6. Look for a file name "OCM.ini”. It will look like a page with a small gear to the right. Right click it and choose "Open with Word pad".

7. Look for the line that states "SKILLPORT_SECURE_LOGIN=True" and replace the "True" with "False" so that the line looks like this "SKILLPORT_SECURE_LOGIN=False"

8. Save the file and close it.

9. Log in as normal.

Question: After I log in and go to access my course, it comes up on a new page stating”…loading, please wait…..” but nothing ever happens. What is wrong?

Answer: The course has been stopped by an active pop-up blocker.

If you are running Internet Explorer 7 or 8, it has a pop-up blocker included. Just open Internet Explorer, and click “Tools” on the address bar. Then simply click “turn off pop-up blocker

Both Firefox and Safari have integral Pop-up blockers as well but the location varies with every version. Often they can be found by looking under the “Options” button and clicking through the various menus.
